Monthly spoken word night at Gullivers - last in the series! Compere Monkey Poet introduces nationally acclaimed poets alongside the cream of Manchester's local talent.

This month we present Aoife Mannix (Saturday Live Poetry Special, Radio 6), and Ben Mellor (Radio 4 Slam Champion).

There will also be a prize-winning open mic section on a first-come first-heard basis.

DJ Jez, Red Bulls bedroom to bedlam Winner will be spinning tunes throughout, and at the end of the night play us to a literary climax.

Aoife Mannix is an Irish writer and poet based in London. Her first novel Heritage of Secrets was published in 2008. She is the author of four collections of poetry; The Trick of Foreign Words (2002), The Elephant in the Corner (2005), Growing Up An Alien (2007) and Turn The Clocks Upside Down (2008). She regularly features on BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live and the BBC World Service’s World Today. She has been writer in residence for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Poetry School, Spread the Word, All Change and Apples & Snakes. She has performed throughout the UK including at Latitude, the Big Chill, and Ledbury Poetry Festival. She has toured internationally with the British Council to Nigeria, Turkey, Taiwan, Thailand, India, Norway and Austria.



Ben Mellor is an award-winning slam poet (BBC Radio 4 Slam Champion 2009, Dike Omeje Slam Poetry Award 2008), writer and actor who has performed his work at theatres, festivals, schools and young offender institutes nationally and internationally.

He is the founder of Moksha Arts, a performing arts company dedicated to addressing social and ecological issues. Moksha produced Ben’s debut solo spoken word theatre piece, Voices of Dissent and are currently developing new solo and collaborative projects.

Ben is also a founder member of spoken word/hip hop theatre collective, Pen-ultimate, who are currently touring their debut show, A Night on the Tiles, to venues around the UK.

Ben’s debut poetry collection and spoken word album, both titled Light Made Solid, were published this year by Flapjack Press, and he has had poetry and fiction published by Route, Corporatewatch, Puppywolf and Poetry Review.

In addition to working with studio-based producers and sound designers he performs spoken word, MCs and beatboxes with various musicians including Jason Singh, Myke Wilson and singer/songwriter, Léonie Higgins.
