On Tuesday July 31st Pop Up Poetry at the Bar des Arts welcomes a performance poet and writer from South London who is known for her work both in print and on stages all over Britain and in Holland. Isabel White has been writing for over 30 years. She has performed twice in the Brighton Fringe and in festivals in London, Oxford, Reading, Hastings, Portsmouth, Kent and Chichester, has been poet in residence at three different venues, in Margate, Catford and Darlington, and is a leading figure in the promotion of poetry and writing through the stanza movement. Isabel founded and ran the Chichester Stanza of the Poetry Society for three years and is an active member of the South London Stanza. Her first collection of poetry, “Death and Remembrance” was published in 2010 by Alarms and Excursions and many of her poems and short stories have been published in anthologies, poetry journals and by the BBC. Her poems and performances are witty, observant, sometimes poignant and always entertaining.
Paul Eccentric is known to Bar Des Arts audiences as the madder half of the AntiPoet, who wowed Guildford back in May. For this evening, though, Paul wears his other hat as a writer and teller of short stories. His fervent belief in the need for fairness in life and his observations of life’s frequent unfairness are often the subjects of his stories. Amusing, touching at times, Paul’s stories are modern urban fables. And when he’s wearing his story-telling trousers, he’s hardly recognisable as the punky, triangle-wielding “rrranter” of AntiPoet. Paul is the author of a collection of short stories, a book on performance poetry technique and several DVDs and CDs.
Michael Clift, singer-songwriter, is our third feature this evening, with his haunting songs and original guitar music. Michael is well-known at venues in London and has performed at Kiss the Sky and Words and Music in the Woods among other congenial places.
Of course we’ll be offering the popular open mic that is bringing to the Bar Des Arts regular and new performers and writers every month. Poets and storytellers can sign up from 7.15 or email popupoetry@gmail.com (note the cunning lack of a p in the middle of that address). Dónall Dempsey will host the night with his usual aplomb and a spattering of his poems. It’s going to be a night to remember, however different from the jam-packed evening of the 3rd July it turns out to be.
Sue Kucko at the Bar has asked please could you phone the Bar in advance if you’d like to order something to eat with your drinks, in case there’s a rush of audience through the doors at 7.15 – to make sure you don’t have to wait for your delicious snack platter. Telephone:01483 453227
Entry: Free
Time: 7:30pm
