Apples and Snakes presents
The King's Will supported by Jack Dean
After the success of Dizraeli and the Small gods with support from Toby Thompson, Apples and Snakes return to the Studio@QT with a second helping of music and poetry fusion. This time around we bring ‘Poetronica’ from The King's Will and hip hop poetics from Jack Dean.
MC and spoken word artist Jack Dean will begin the evening with Rain, his 20 minute mini show, developed with Bristol Ferment. Rain tells the story of a boy followed by his own tiny personal cloud. As he fights with growing up and travels from the soggy fields of Devon to the tattered spires of London, Cloudy lingers over him, capturing his memories and telling him stories of the coming flood. Jack Dean uses hip hop poetics to explore two great British institutions: clinical depression and talking about the weather.
The Brilliant new electronica outfit The Kings Will, made up of Oxbridge law graduate turned poet, football pundit and all-round ideal dinner guest Musa Okwonga and composer, producer, artist and mathematician, Giles Hayter will headline.
Praised and played by BBC6 Music (Tom Robinson) and XFm (John Kennedy, Mary Anne Hobbs) The Fool (Musa Okwonga, on vocals) and The Vassal (Giles Hayter, on beats) fuse poetry and bass music to tell the story, through music, of their struggle to save their ageing King and his realm from ruin.
‘Musa’s style oscillates between solemn introspection and the dramatic boom of a rousing Shakespearean monologue. Imagine Brian Blessed re-born as an ectomorphic Ugandan on an occasional ragga tip... Hayter’s faultless production journeys through the many manifestations of electronica’ Tola Ositelu, Freelance Journalist
