meetings in New Combination Room, C Staircase, New Court
A DISCUSSION FORUM at 3-5 pm
with poets
ALFRED CORN, NORMAN FINKELSTEIN, BARRY GOLDENSOHN
MICHAEL HELLER, MARTHA KAPOS
chaired by RICHARD BERENGARTEN
This is the first event of this kind in our series. Each of these five poets will talk about his/her own work, before going on to explore and discuss wider themes, including issues and patterns in contemporary American poetry and poetics. These five poets have very diverse backgrounds and directions, each with his/her own unique take on the art: Norman Finkelstein and Michael Heller have written several critical books; Martha Kapos is editor of Poetry London; Alfred Corn has written a book on prosody; and Barry Goldensohn's latest collection of poems is on musical themes. The panel's interests also range widely: for example, from Wallace Stevens to George Oppen and the Objectivists, from Rilke to Walter Benjamin, from Bach to Thelonious Monk. There will be good opportunities for all attending to engage in discussion and questions.
followed on the same day by POETS' MEETING 4 at 7.30 pm
