Bibulous literary event Words on Tap returns to the Chemic Tavern on June 28th, with heavy emphasis on music as well as the written word. This month's line-up includes Peter Spafford and Richard Ormrod, The Ocean Loiners, Rachel Connor and Pete Lancaster (see below for details). Plus, limited open-mic slots. Doors 7.30pm.
Peter Spafford's work has been performed on radio, television, and on the streets; in theatres, hospitals, prisons, and in the bath. Richard Ormrod was named Musician of the Year 2012 by Jazz Yorkshire. He leads and performs with numerous bands all over the region.
The Ocean Loiners are a Leeds-based vocal that specialise in sea shanties. They meet at the The Packhouse every month and re open to new members and they have performed at various venues around West Yorkshire and on the radio.
Pete Lancaster was born in Bradford but migrated to the warm South for his youth. He returned north, however, to complete his education before teaching English at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield, for over thirty years.
Since his retirement he has attempted to bring some order to the chaotic creativity of his earlier years by writing poetry and painting pictures. He belongs to the Black Horse Poets and has been a winner in the Red Shed Poetry Competition. He has also run creative writing events and workshops with local schools and community groups. Two books of poetry have been published by Currock Press, ‘The Blue Bridge’ (2009) and ‘Crossing’ (2013).
Rachel Connor writes fiction, non-fiction and radio drama. She has lectured in literature and creative writing at the Universities of Glasgow and Salford and now combines writing with working for Arvon at its Lumb Bank centre, the former home of Ted Hughes. Her debut novel Sisterwives is a novel about polygamy, community and desire and was praised by Sara Maitland for its 'remarkable beauty and intensity.' She is currently working on a radio drama, 'The Cloistered Soul' - which will be broadcast on Radio 4 in early 2014.
