If you're looking for a serious and seriously entertaining summer poetry "fix", then do everything you can to get to Suffolk on the 21st August for our eleventh Poetry Prom - a terrific trio of David Constantine, Wendy Cope and Kay Ryan on the Snape Maltings Concert Hall stage. And in case you need reminding of the credentials of this year's line-up...
David Constantine not only honours the lives of ordinary people but unflinchingly confronts human cruelty and destructiveness. Although he owes much to the European poets he so brilliantly translates, notably Hölderlin and Brecht, he also absolutely belongs to the tradition of English verse - the Romantics, Clare, Hardy, Owen, Edward Thomas, Graves. For honesty and compassion, there are few poets to touch him.
Wendy Cope belongs to another fine English tradition. We see her as today's leading poetic representative of the humorist line of Wilde, Jerome K Jerome, Max Beerbohm, Noel Coward, Stella Gibbons and John Betjeman. She is one of the UK's very few indisputably popular poets with a gift to combine deeply serious content with tonal mirth, not to mention her apparently effortless control of rhythm and rhyme.
Kay Ryan is a complete one-off. A former US Poet Laureate, her short, characteristically bookmark-shaped poems are propelled by wit and ingenious internal rhyme.
