Dannie Abse in Conversation
Over his long and remarkable career, Dannie Abse has published many acclaimed poetry collections as well as works of fiction, criticism, autobiography and plays. The Presence, an elegy for his wife, received the 2008 Wales Book of the Year award, while Running Late won the Roland Mathias Prize. Abse's poetry is informed by his work as a doctor, Jewish culture and the speech rhythms and legends of his native Wales, his verse characterised by an almost medical care and precision.
Speak, Old Parrot returns to some of his perennial themes: loss, love, medicine and its moral implications, the nature of creativity, Jewish folk tradition and the passing of time. Dannie Abse will be in conversation with Dan Eltringham, co-editor of The Literateur and a 2014 Costa Prize poetry judge. Tickets cost £10, which includes a copy of Speak, Old Parrot and refreshments on the night. Early Bird tickets are only £8 if you book before 31st August.
