Alice Oswald is a born poet, embracing and extending the canon of English poetry. The subject of tonight's performance, Memorial, is currently short listed for the £25000 Warwick Prize.
Innovative, accomplished and committed to the live performance of her work, her powerful poems demonstrate a love of the oral tradition, a passionate concern for the planet and a deep affinity with the natural world.
With Memorial, she has created a glitteringly original new version of The Iliad. Part translation and part re-interpretation, her approach to Homer's classic war epic has been to focus on the supporting players in the story - 'the ordinary soldiers who trip over, or die crying for their mother.'
The result is an elegy of quite extraordinary power and relevance, brought to life by Alice's mesmerising on-stage delivery during which she and the audience are transported to the brutal beautiful killing fields of Troy.
This is a rare opportunity to experience and relish Memorial in its entirety, off by heart, as it should be heard. The performance is part of the Halesworth Arts Festival and takes place in conjunction with The Poetry Trust
The performance runs for 70 minutes without an interval.
Price: £10.50
