Haikus are 3-line syllable based poems which originate from Japan. Modern haikus are easy, fun and really awesome to write! Here is one beautiful example:
The world’s my story
The present tense in my ink
I need more paper
Humanity Paradox : Neer, Karl & Michael
In August 2012, on a sunny day in Piccadilly, two friends shared loose leaf tea and wrote haikus together in a journal. Turn by turn, they wrote alternate lines, co-crafting these unexpected paradigm-shifting pieces. And it is this collaborative haiku-writing experience that we would love to share with you through our debut HaikuJAM event at The Poetry Café in Covent Garden.
At 3pm the collaborative haiku-writing session will begin - we will provide all the necessary instructions and materials (pens, paper and perhaps a few other surprises…) on the day. Briefly however, we are expecting around 50 attendees and these fine people will JAM together- Tom of Finchley will set a haiku theme and write the first line; Waterloo’s Sally will add the second line and Covent Garden’s Poetry Cafe staff complete the collaboration with the magical third and final line… And this process continues in a relaxed and informal environment over lots of free loose leaf oriental teas!
All you need to bring with you is your creative spirit and enthusiasm. So please don’t worry if you are not a seasoned Haiku Ninja or if this is the very first time you’re even hearing about haiku. The experience is intended for people from very different walks of life with very different stories to tell.
If the notion of a couple of hours of collaborative haiku-writing in Covent Garden on a nice Saturday afternoon excites you, then please feel more than welcome to come along and JAM!
The event is FREE! As space is limited, places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Simply RSVP to hj@haikujam.com for a ticket or register in person at The Poetry Café.
We believe in channelling human creativity to make beautiful things happen. Let’s JAM: www.haikujam.com
