6th January 2014

Never mind the chill winds and snowy showers of January. On the 6th of the month with New Year celebrations behind us come early so you don't miss our guest. It will warm your toes, and your heart to come and hear a long time friend of the Puzzle, whose pakoras have sustained us on cold nights before. It is none other than Steve Anderson.

Steve, living with Jo, his two daughters, and his 96 year old father, is sometimes seen out educating his son in the virtues of drinking etiquette.
Now 52, Steve has been writing poetry for 35 years, during which time he has trod the boards alongside Ralph Richardson, Tommy Steel,Stephan Grappelli, Ben Kingsley, David Suchett, and Postman Pat.
Money from first employment bought a guitar which was used to serenade Jenny Seagrove, but not by Steve, he couldn't play yet .He called on Jenny when walking from John o Groats to Lands End in 1980, but she was out.
The guitar was sadly stolen in Hawaii but the next one has been used to perform solo, and in duos and trios, since the mid 1980s
Self employed from the late 80s to 96, Steve worked as freelance technician, joiner, electrician, and then had a small building firm
Steve's proudest craft creation as been that of establishing a woodwork training space for special needs young adults and coworkers in a residential care home in Scotland. Here he learned about and taught, green woodworking, basket making, leather work, blacksmithing, bell casting, clay processing and firing, and learned a lot about people.
Returning to Yorkshire in 2006, he trained to teach and worked in FE for three years - a soul destroying experience.
Leaving teaching has lead to the establishment of I spice in 2009, the manifestation of innumerable friends' exhortations to 'open a restaurant', voiced over 35 years.
Diagnosed with advanced cancer in 2012, Steve is currently performing his poetry and prose, editing his work with a view to publication, and is also now collaborating with musician Andy Wood.
Foremost a craftsman, I enjoy the contact with material that quality work allows. The immediacy of making artifacts I find relates closely to the satisfaction of expressing thought/emotion on paper. Dynamic acts both - a joyful realisation as I become less physically able.
Performance of the Word is compelling and instructive of poetic understanding, a symbiotic process.

The Puzzle Hall Inn, in God's own country of Pennine West Yorkshire, is full of character, and full of characters in the adjoining bar. But Sowerby Bridge's Puzzle Poets, aided by the mic, gave as good as they got on Monday night in terms of noise - and delivered high-quality poetry, too. Guest poet Ralph Dartford read from his new collection Cigarettes, Beer and Love, and gave us two football poems as well, and spoke of his pride at being named poet-in-residence of Ossett Town FC. John Foggin maintained the Ossett connection and contributed some masterly poems from his sequence of childhood recollections; David Lindsay delivered a fevered account of some right carryings on at Luddenden Foot; other contributors included Spoken Weird's Genevieve Walsh. Write Out Loud's Julian Jordon and Greg Freeman added their twopennworth, and with Freda Davis presiding serenely over proceedings, it was no puzzle why this was a very satisfying poetry night.

Hello, I didn't notice the comment section had been added to our gig. That's good. Look forward to a few more WOL visitors. This month's guest sounds worth a trip.

Hi Alexandros, Michael does sometimes read at The Puzzle (And has been a past guest) but I am not in regular contact with him. As I suspect you know, his work and the delivery of it are spellbinding. Win
