On the Thirteenth Stroke of Midnight
This event on 10th February 2014 at 18:30 has past.
Michel Remy's latest publication, On the Thirteenth Stroke of Midnight, is the first published anthology of British surrealist poetry, taking its title from Herbert Read's words when he opened the Surrealist Poems and Objects exhibition at the London Gallery at midnight on 24 November 1937.
Within a few years the Second World War would effectively fragment the British surrealist movement, dispersing its key members. Yet British surrealist writing was vibrant and now takes its place in the wider European context of literary surrealism.
Remy discusses his publication and is joined by British surrealist artist, John W. Welson to read selected works from the anthology by artists including Emmy Bridgewater, Ithell Colquhoun, Desmond Morris, Humphrey Jennings, Conroy Maddox, Roland Penrose and many more.
Signed copies of the book will be available to purchase following the event.
