Michael Symmons Roberts with Karen McCarthy Woolf
A series of readings at York’s Friargate Theatre, each featuring an established poet and his or her own choice of a second poet – an exciting, emerging talent – to present some of the most influential and promising new writers side by side.
Michael Symmons Roberts
Michael Symmons Roberts’ latest collection, Drysalter (Jonathan Cape) was the winner of the 2013 Forward Prize for Best Collection and the Costa Poetry Award (2013), and is shortlisted for the 2013 T.S. Eliot Prize. The Costa judges described Drysalter as “contemporary life filtered through the form of common prayer with a musicality sustained across a memorable body of work.”
He has published two novels, and is Professor of Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Karen McCarthy Woolf
Born in London to an English mother and Jamaican father Karen McCarthy Woolf is the recipient of the Kate Betts Memorial Prize and an Arts and Humanities Research Council scholarship from Royal Holloway where she is a PhD candidate.
She is the editor of three literary anthologies, including Ten: The New Wave which is forthcoming from Bloodaxe Books. Her poetry is published widely, notably with Poems on the Underground, the American journal Prairie Schooner and Poetry Review. Her collection An Aviary of Small Birds will be out this Autumn with Carcanet.
