Readers Cicely Herbert, Piers Plowright and John Theocharis with Apollo Chamber Players.
As part of our current tube display of Greek Poems on the Underground, marking the Greek Presidency of the Council of the European Union, we are celebrating the value of Greek culture to our own times - Greek art, myths, philosophy, the troubled history reflected in poetry and drama.
Our programme includes poems by Sappho, Plato (translated by Shelley), Palladas (translated by Tony Harrison); a selection of poems by Cavafy, including Waiting for the Barbarians, an extract from Amorgos by Nikos Gatsos, and poems by the English Philhellines Byron, Shelley and Keats.
The Apollo Chamber Players perform early string quartets by Theodorakis and a new arrangement of Street of Dreams by Hadjidakis.
After the performance, the audience is invited to enjoy a glass of wine specially commissioned for the Greek presidency, courtesy of the Greek Embassy in London. Chocolates are courtesy of Carpo of Piccadilly. Posters of the Greek Poems on the Underground, with bilingual texts, are free to the audience. Poems on the Underground: A New Edition will be on sale in the foyer.
