“The work was stunning. The quality of the writing – its honesty, bravery and commitment, alongside excellent performances - was superb. Paul and Jane stood so firm on stage, holding the space with such confidence”.

Flea – written and performed by Paul Hawkins
A spoken-word storytelling journey written by Paul Hawkins, based on three years he spent occupying properties in London. Flea tells the story of several characters and a chain of events that began 1990 in the (in)famous squatted community of Claremont Road in Leyton east London, which was the final bastion of resistance to the building of the M11 Link Road.
Paul is a poet, writer and storyteller and has performed his work at The Royal Opera House, Womad, The Shelley Theatre and many other venues. You'll find his work in Poetry Bus, Rising, Stride, CUT UP!, Fit to Work: Poets Against ATOS, The Interpreters House, The Occupy Wall Street Anthology, Museum of Alcohol, Word Riot, Verba Vitae, M58, The Noir Erasure Anthology and other sites, walls and ‘zines … he also co-edits poetry pamphlet Boscombe Revolution. His pamphlet collection, Claremont Road was published by Erbacce Press in 2013. He is an associate artist of Vita Nova and is working on a new collection of poems for Erbacce Press due out in 2014.
St. Anne’s – written & performed by Jane Cartwright
This is a story of an episode, a group of events that leads us through the NHS Mental Health System into the Acute Admissions unit and out the other side.
Jane is a poet, storyteller and spoken word performer now based in Bournemouth. She has been working with Vita Nova for over five years. Jane’s life took many twists and turns and, after 28 years of drug addiction and alcoholism, she arrived in rehab.
She is a mother, widow and a voracious lover. Jane is Dual Diagnosis and has been in and out of the Mental Health System most of her life. She is a survivor and writes hard-hitting, honest grit-lit for page and stage. Jane has had her work published in the Clean anthology and performed at festivals, charity events, a Psychiatrists convention, the Royal Opera House and in her local manor.
Flea and St Anne's were developed with the support of arts charity Vita Nova
as part of Boscombe Fringe Festival 2013
