BURN AFTER READING is a community of emerging poets established by Jacob Sam-La Rose that manifests a diverse range of poetics from 'spoken word' to 'page' and points in between.
Continuing a series of events that celebrate and showcase some of the best recognised and most influential UK poetry collectives, on Friday 6th June at the Gallery Café in Bethnal Green, Burn After Reading opens its doors to the poets of MALIKA'S KITCHEN. Named after its founder Malika Booker, Malika’s Kitchen was established in 2001 to celebrate craft and community. Since then, it's grown to embrace chapters in Chicago and India.
Alongside poets from both collectives, this month will feature:
Roger Robinson
A long established member of Malika’s Kitchen, Roger is a Trinidadian writer and musician based in the UK. Chosen by Decibel as one of 50 writers who have influenced the black-British writing canon over the past 50 years. He has received commissions from Theatre Royal Stratford East - where he has also been an Associate Artist, The National Trust, London Open House and the National Portrait Gallery. His books include fiction Adventures in 3D and poetry collections Suitcase and Suckle winner of the Peoples Book Prize.
Will Tyas
Burn After Reading poet Will Tyas writes poetry and makes sound art. His first play was performed in January 2013 and his project Mina’s Ghost has enjoyed radio play on BBC 6Music. His current pursuit involves combining technology with art. He couldn’t think of anything humorous to round off his bio with.
