Open Mic Event

Dónall Dempsey and Jan Windle began hosting poetry, song and spoken word events at the Bar des Arts at the beginning of 2012, and now host Pop Up Poets regularly on the third Tuesday of each month. We normally invite two or three guests to feature (20 minute sets), and the rest of the evening is devoted to the open mic (5 minute spots). We have a loyal group of regulars but every month we meet new poets and audience members who come back to enjoy the warm welcome they find in this stylish but friendly venue.
Ernie Burns, Robert Garnham, Holly Hopkins and the Claire Booker Players are our guests this month so it’s going to be another varied and entertaining evening!
Ernie Burns has run and hosted several open mic nights in London over the past twenty years and currently is resident poet and co-host of “Platform One”, the poetry night on the second Saturday of each month at the Poetry Café in Covent Garden. He entertains brilliantly using a combination of quirky humour and a left-field view of life.
Robert Garnham is a multiple slam winner and host of the celebrated Poetry Island poetry night at the Blue Walnut Cafe in Torquay, Devon. He's also a master of timing and wit.
We're looking forward to hosting another performance by Claire Booker’s Players of one of Claire's 15 minute plays, a comedy titled 'Last Man in Watford' This performance is part of their tour to The Hen & Chickens, Southwark Playhouse, Loose Muse and The Sunbury Arts Festival.
We first met Holly Hopkins at the Poetry School in London, where she was working and studying, and were amazed by her brilliant, apparently effortless writing. She has published a pamphlet, to be released soon. Her wit and humour and surprising imagery are something to look forward to eagerly.
All that and the usual amazing line up of Open Mic readers – free!
Get there at 7pm if you want to be sure of signing up for an open mic spot – we’ll be starting at 7:30 on the dot and there will be 10 open mic slots available.
