It's been a year since Spoken Word London hosted its first event at Vogue Fabrics, and to commemorate the anniversary we're doing our first themed event at Vogue: speaking out against hate crime.
From Britain First invading mosques, to Trayvon Martin shot on the streets in the USA, to Islan Nettles the transgendered woman beaten to death, to Roger Sylvester who died in police custody, to Nahid Almanea stabbed for wearing a hijab, to Stosh Mugisha the lesbian raped to correct her sexuality in Uganda, to Ian Baynham the gay man beaten to death by teenagers in Trafalgar Square in 2011... We'll be standing up against racism, homophobia, bigotry, and the 'palatable xenophobia' of parties like UKIP, in a call for greater harmony.
We'll have a mixture of regular SWL readers speaking to the theme - full lineup to be announced soon - and the usual open-mic format on the night. 5 minute slots will be available to sign up from 7.30-8pm, with readings beginning at 8pm. Nearest station: Dalston Kingsland.
Free entry, but please buy a drink at the bar.
