"Poems Become Songs" - Sounds Lyrical Project at the Ilkley Literature Festival Fringe, Friday 17th October, 9 pm
The Sounds Lyrical Project is a collaboration between a group of York-based poets and composers seeking to find new ways of fusing the poetic word with the musical sound, and to attract new audiences to both contemporary poetry and modern musical composition. The Project has received Arts Council funding to produce a set of new creative works fusing the words of the Project's poets with new music by composers David Lancaster, Peter Byrom-Smith, Tim Brooks and David Power, and to showcase this work at a series of concert performances combining spoken word and music.
The next performance in the Sounds Lyrical concert series takes place on Friday 17th October in the Wildman theatre, Ilkley Playhouse, as part of the Ilkley Literature Festival Fringe. The performance starts at 9 pm and admission is free.
The concert will feature spoken word performances by Project poets Rose Drew, Alan Gillott, Lizzi Linklater and Andy Humphrey, alongside musical settings of their poems performed by Benjamin Lindley (baritone) and Josephine Peach (piano). Josephine is a well-known performer, accompanist and teacher and is the pianist in The Fairfax Ensemble which performs regularly throughout Yorkshire with a wide repertoire from early Baroque music to the present day. Benjamin Lindley read music at Oxford, and is now developing a wide portfolio of business interests which range from his musical performances to writing for a motor-cycle magazine. Both are musicians with a very broad view which extends into their lively and thoughtful preparation for recitals and concerts. They have championed the work of the Project's composers in York and throughout Yorkshire and are delighted to be bringing this wonderful new work to the Ilkley Literature Festival.
