Note: In Howard Assembly Rooms at venue.

Set to a narrative poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson this mesmerising piece follows Enoch Arden, a fisherman turned merchant sailor. Following a horrific accident, Enoch Arden is shipwrecked on a desert island. Returning home after 10 years, he makes a painful discovery…

This rare chance to hear Tennyson’s creation brought to life through Strauss’ fascinating music is not to be missed. On-screen there will be a projection of the rippling tide, adding a three dimensional element to this truly memorable event.

Famously recorded by Claude Rains and Glenn Gould, here the piece’s wonderfully dynamic relationship between spoken voice and piano is brought to life by music theatre actor Dale Rapley, and Opera North’s Head of Music, Martin Pickard, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Strauss’ birth.
