HowTheLightGetsIn Poetry Day 26 May Hay on Wye
Tickets: https://howthelightgetsin.iai.tv/events/all-day-poetry-pass/
HowTheLightGetsIn has invited some of the word’s leading poets to explore the festival theme – Fantasy and Reality. The result is an exhilarating day celebrating the written and spoken word, where literary, comic and slam poets jostle uncontrollably for your attention.
Session One: 12.00
Salena Godden, Mark Niel and Pete the Temp
Renaissance Woman Selena Godden has been hailed as “the doyenne of the spoken word scene’ (BBC Radio 3’s The Verb). Mark Niel is the poet Laureate – of Milton Keynes, commissioned by the BBC to write a poem to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Mr The Temp is a poet, beat-box artist and Slam Poet Champion who combines riveting spoken word with audience participation.
Session Two: 15.00
Philip Gross, Don Paterson and John Osborne
Winner of the TS Eliot prize for his poem The Water Table, Philip Gross will explore whether metaphor smuggles fantasy beyond the border of reality. OBE, Forward Poetry Prize and TS Eliot Prize winner, Don Paterson has more poetry credentials than you can shake a dictionary at. John Osborne’s one-man show enjoyed a 60 day national tour and a Radio 4 adaptation.
Session Three: 18.00
Michael Horovitz, Vanessa Vie, Keston Sutherland and Luke Kennard
50 years on from the International Poetry Incarnation, when Ginsberg and Horovitz performed to a sold-out audience at the Royal Albert Hall, Michael Horovitz will perform with his collaborator Vanessa Vie in this special session. Keston Sutherland is one of the foremost poets in England’s contemporary experimental scene – his last collection The Odes to TL61P is ’one of 2013's most profoundly passionate books, full of hauntingly involved arguments and lyrical satire’ – Sunday Times. Luke Kennard s an award-winning poet, critic and writer, and will tackle the theme of Fantasy and Reality through the application of Surrealism.
Session Four: 20.30
Labi Siffre
His first performance for years HowTheLightGetsIn has much pleasure in welcoming Labi Siffre to The Hat. Labi Siffre is a musician and poet famous for penning It Must be Love and I Got The. Siffre has anchored his career on confronting the bigotries of homophobia and racism.
