Event Details
On the evening of 20th June 2015, Scottish poet J O Morgan gives a dramatic reading of his acclaimed epic poem At Maldon at St John’s Church. In vivid verse, the poet re-imagines the summer's day in August 991 when a ragtag army of Anglo-Saxons joined battle with a party of Viking raiders on the coast of Essex. Loyalty, hope, loss, courage, and most of all shared humanity are powerfully evoked - and Morgan's voice brings alive with dramatic immediacy the events of thousands of years ago.
"Eye-sharp and utter and visceral, so startling yet so emphatic and so lyrical"
Kevin Crossley-Holland
"Inventive, striking and memorable. A reminder that Morgan is one of the most original poets around."
Andrew Motion, Guardian
