Tolu Agbelusi presents
HOME IS…
In association with Apples and Snakes, supported by Arts Council England
Part of Islington Word Festival 2016
On the same morning as the Government unleashes “Go Home” buses on the streets of London, 4 individuals from different backgrounds find themselves in a temporary detention room following what appears to be an immigration raid on a train station in which people of colour are profiled and detained indiscriminately. As they react to their predicament and to each other, their individual stories unravel a tale of subtle prejudices, displacement narratives, daily microagressions and coping mechanisms. Ilé la wa, which is Yoruba for We are Home, is a play in progress, exploring the concept of home and what happens when your idea of home conflicts with your reality.
Ilé la wa is part of The Home Is Project, a multimedia multi-arts exploration of the impact of physical, emotional and psychological displacement on people’s concepts of home.
In addition to the play, itself partly inspired by various poetic narratives, 5 acclaimed poets will create new work, building on stories collected from a selection of interviews and workshops recorded as part of the project. Tolu Agbelusi, Tshaka Campbell, Russenї Fisher, Jemilia Wisdom and Belinda Zhawi will create new poems which will then be developed into new pieces of work by an array of visual artists.
This is a work in progress event previewing part of the play and a sample of the print and visual art works that have been produced in development of the project which will be showing in full in November 2016.
