The theme of this year’s National Poetry Day is ‘Messages’ and in the first of a new season of events at The Works’ Canteen Roy McFarlane will be the guest poet on Tuesday 4 October, celebrating National Poetry Day with his newly launched poetry collection Beginning With Your Last Breath from Nine Arches Press.
Born in Birmingham and now living in Tipton, Roy is Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Poet in Residence and Performer in Residence to the Warwickshire Poetry Voices Project. Described as "a charismatic, powerful, engaging performer" with "an enormously likeable manner", Roy is a passionate reader of his work who immediately connects with audiences.
Also on-message for the evening will be MC for The Works’ Canteen, the Black Country Living Museum’s poet-in-residence, poet and accordion player Dave Reeves.
Dave, who is also presenter of the online spoken word programme for www.radiowildfire.com, said, ‘The new season of spoken word, storytelling and poetry gets off to an great start with Roy’s excellent writing and powerful performance skills. There will plenty of opportunity in the Open Mic section of the evening for people to read their own work.’
