Making a Living as a Poet

In the first of the SoA's new Poetry and Spoken Word Group's series of events on Making a Living as a Poet, we bring you a panel discussion with Julia Bird, Tom Chivers and Chair Tamar Yoseloff.

Questions from the floor will be welcomed at the end, and there will be a short drinks and nibbles reception after the event.

Julia Bird is Creative Director at the Poetry School and an independent literature producer and promoter at Jaybird Live Literature, the company she founded in 2006. Before Jaybird, she worked for Brewery Arts in Gloucestershire, for the Poetry Book Society and as a freelance author tour producer for the British Council and the Poetry Translation Centre. She has two full-length collections of poetry published by Salt.

Tom Chivers is a poet, publisher and arts producer currently living in East London. He is Director of Penned in the Margins, an independent poetry publisher and arts producing company, and has previously been co-Director of London Word Festival (2007- 2011) and Poet in Residence at the Bishopsgate Institute. He has written two poetry collections and two pamphlets, including The Terrors (Nine Arches Press, 2009; shortlisted for a Michael Marks Award), and edited five anthologies for Penned in the Margins. In 2011, he won an Eric Gregory Award.

Tamar Yoseloff currently works as a freelance tutor in creative writing, with a particular interest in the relationship between poetry and contemporary visual art. A Formula for Night: New and Selected Poems was published by Seren in October 2015. Formerly, a chapbook with photographs by Vici MacDonald (Hercules Editions, 2012) was shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award.
