A one-day writing course with Matthew Welton. Use linguistic elements and mathematical ideas - such as spelling, vocabulary, symmetry and number patterns - to generate new writing and blur the distinctions between style, voice and poetic form.
In this session we will forget about the usual elements of poetic form, such as rhyme and metre, and put aside familiar structures like the haiku and sonnet. Instead we will focus on linguistic elements – vocabulary and spelling, for example – and bring in mathematical ideas such as symmetry and number patterns. Through this approach we will generate new work and blur the distinctions between style, voice and poetic form.
One-day workshop from 10:30am to 4:30pm. There will a lunch break and tea breaks during the day. Lunch is not provided. Students are welcome to bring their own, or to visit the local shops and cafes during the break.
