What happens to the children whose parents can’t look after them but no one adopts? Theatre director Amanda Huxtable leads a discussion between poet Lemn Sissay and novelist Kit de Waal, both of whom have direct experience of the care system and address the issue in their work.

Lemn Sissay is one of the nation’s best-loved poets; his latest collection is Gold from the Stone. An official poet of the 2012 Olympics, he presented 10 Pieces at the 2016 Proms and is a great example of the success that children raised in care can achieve.

Kit de Waal has worked in criminal and family law and advised Social Services on the care of foster children. Her debut novel, My Name Is Leon, tells the story of a mixed-race boy separated from his younger brother in the care system in 1980s Britain.
