The eclectic Jazz Verse Jukebox continues its spring season on Friday 19th May at Hoxton Hall, London. 
Described as “the perfect jazz poetry party” (Michael Horovitz), the JAZZ VERSE JUKEBOX continues the age-old tradition of intertwining jazz improvisation and spoken word. Join us for what promises to be a thrilling night of diverse spoken word & jazz from some of the freshest exponents on the scene. Plus a ‘Jukebox’ Open Mic for poets & singers. Hosted by & with music from Jumoké Fashola.

ANTHONY ANAXAGORU (@Anthony1983)
Anthony Anaxagorou is an award-winning poet, short story writer, publisher and poetry educator. He has published several volumes of poems and essays, a spoken word EP and a collection of short stories whilst having also written for theatre.
His poetry has appeared on both national television and radio as well as being published in various literary magazines and anthologies.  He was a judge for the 2016 BBC Young Writers Award and is currently the poet in residence at several London schools where he teaches poetry and creative writing. In 2015 his poetry and fiction writing won him the Groucho Maverick Award and in 2016 he was shortlisted for the Hospital Club’s H-100 award. He founded Out-Spoken in 2012 and Out-Spoken Press in 2013. His work has subsequently been studied in universities, schools and colleges across the USA, U.K and Australia, as well as being translated into Spanish, German, French and Japanese.

JACOB SAM LA ROSE (@Jsamlarose)
Jacob Sam-La Rose’s poetry has been characterised as vivid, masterly and carefully structured. His collection ‘Breaking Silence‘ was shortlisted for both a Forward Poetry prize and the Aldeburgh Fenton award, and is a set text for the OCR English Language and Literature A Level (EMC). He is widely recognised as an indefatigable facilitator, mentor and supporter of young and emerging poets. His writing has explored and interrogated Black-British/British-Caribbean cultural identity, ritual and tradition, hybridity, science fiction, coding and aspects of popular culture (drawing particularly upon comic book narratives, gaming and contemporary electronica). His poems and essays have appeared in Ploughshares, Wasafiri, In Their Own Words (Salt, 2012), Poetry by Heart (Penguin, 2014), and more. Jacob has been commissioned to produce work for the National Gallery, the BBC, Nitro (Black Music Theatre Co-Operative) and International PEN. He’s toured with the British Council and featured at a range of international festivals and venues, including the Leipzig Buchmesse, the Urb Festival (Helsinki), the Cuirt festival (Galway) and the Gwendolyn Brooks Black Writers’ Conference (Chicago). He’s been positioned as a writer-in-residence at Raffles Institution (Singapore), has worked with the Ministry of Education in Malaysia to train English teachers, and has worked with writers in Riga, Kuala Lumpur, Gaborone and Rio De Janeiro. His work has been translated into Portuguese, Latvian, French and Dutch.

JJ BOLA @jjbola
A Kinshasa born, London raised writer, poet, and educator.  JJ Bola published three books of poetry Elevate (2012), Daughter of the Sun (2014) and WORD (2015). June 2017 sees the publication of his debut novel, No Place to Call Home.
JJ Bola’s work is centred on a narrative of empowerment, humanisation, healing of trauma as well as discovery of self through art, literature and poetry. Creating the increasingly popular adage, 'hype your writers like you do you rappers', he believes that the true purpose of poetry (art) is to expose the reality of this world and how to, most importantly, survive it.
JJ Bola reads regularly at shows and festivals across London/UK such as  Tongue Fu, Vocals & Verses, Chill Pill, The Round House, Ventnor Fringe, Glastonbury etc as well as Universities; SOAS, UCL, Oxford, Lincoln, University of Birmingham, and a mini tour of the US West Coast in 2015/16, LA, Da Poetry Lounge, UCLA, Standford University and Merrit College in the Bay Area, San Francisco and Oakland, where he won the Oakland Poetry Slam.

Jumoké Fashola is an award-winning broadcaster & vocalist. She currently presents the Sunday Breakfast show, Inspirit with Jumoké Fashola (BBC Radio London).  Other radio credits include The Ronnie Scott's Radio Show (Jazz FM). The Late Show (BBC London 94.9fm) You and Yours (Radio 4) Pause for Thought (Radio 2), Everywoman (BBC World Service). Her TV credits include the Holiday Programme (BBC1), Summer Holiday (BBC1). A regular compere for the London Jazz Festival, she is the creator of the Jazz Verse Jukebox which had a 7 year residency at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club & which is now resident at Hoxton Hall. Her current album is ‘The Condition of Being A Woman’.
