Open Mic Event

An evening of poetry and music. The event features Emily Berry, recently appointed editor of the Poetry Review, who is working on a PhD in Creative and Critical Writing at the University of East Anglia. Her debut collection, Dear Boy, whose focus is on love in absence, won the Forward Prize for Best First Collection in 2013. The voices in the poems often emphasize the continual, bleak yet necessary and desired effort of loving; the heart is: ‘the junkie engine running on desire and regret’. Her eagerly awaited and enthusiastically reviewed second collection Stranger, Baby was published earlier this year. Its poems manage the chaos of loss through tightly structured, less metaphorically indulgent verse which is eminently satisfying both to read and listen to. Braddyll Fields will provide the musical interlude entertaining us mainly with a cappella party songs carefully chosen to suit the event and the venue. And of course there will be the unpredictability of the open mic and M/C Caroline Gilfillan to complete another memorable Saturday evening's entertainment.
