We are back with the excellent Chris Jam who is a firm favourite of ours and unmissable!
We'll let him introduce himself:
I am a performance poet, DJ and radio presenter originally from London I came to Manchester in 1986 at the height of the summer of love and along with Tomlyn Mckinley formed JaMMc's......a sound system with a distinctive lyrical style.
In 1994 with Segun Lee French, and the backing of Green Room Director Garfield Allen we created Speakeasy
- www.speakeasymcr.org/ - an open mic night for spoken word artists and lyricists of all forms. Speakeasy has run for over ten years and nurtured many of the performance poets thrilling audiences and delivering workshops in Manchester and has become an essential component of the ManCuniVerseS extremely vibrant spoken word circuit.
Working with Speakeasy and a diverse range of international and national guest artists allowed me to develop my own unique style.
Four years ago myself, Guy Perry from Xaverian 6th form college and Shirley May an original speakeasy member
and co-founder of Manchester’s deliciously dynamic writing and performance collective Young Identity
- www.youngidentity.org/ - harnessed a shared passion for working with young people and language and created Wordsmith – www.wordsmithawards.com , an inter school wordshop and showcase project.
I have also recorded cult tracks such as the 2000 Blues (Rainy City Music) and Hungry Ghost (Grand Central Records),
and most recently Mancunian Way which was licensed for a Hacienda compilation that was released in Japan.
I am also gigging with Manchester band the effektuators – www.effectuators.com.
We are very excited to welcome back the one, the only Paul Jenkins to our humble stage! We love him to bits and you will too!
Paul is a poet, teacher and author based in Ramsbottom, Lancs.
Working within primary & secondary schools to develop literacy through poetry & drama- Paul travels up and down the length and breadth of the UK helping children and teachers to not only develop their confidence in creative writing but also to pass those delightful tests that the government are so keen for them to do. (He knows an fronted adverbial phrase when he sees one and will happily tell you where to stick it....)
Paul has published three books; one novel and two collections of poetry - one of which he will happily tell you reached the Kindle Top 5 (It's almost as interesting as his story about when he once met Michael Caine....)
His latest - 'My Bottom did a Burp in Class' was a collaborative piece with his nine year old son and is the subject of his current schools tour. He performs regularly at spoken word events and will be previewing new material from volume two of his 'Poems from Villagetown' series - which is due for release this October.
Open Mic slots are available by requesting them by email or on the night.
