Put off that Mask: Persona, Trauma and Authenticity in Contemporary Poetry. This year's lecture by Sinéad Morrissey, sponsored by the Poetry Book Society
Our lecturer for 2018 is this year's Forward Prize winner, Sinéad Morrissey. She will explore ideas of voice and authenticity in the work of a number of contemporary poets who are responding directly to trauma in their work. The lyric is traditionally understood as an utterance of both heartfelt and honest emotion, the conduit of an ''I'' voice engaged in an intimate conversation with a privileged reader and/or listener, and articulating itself, to intensifying effect, within the constraints of poetic form. She will question the extent to which this model of the lyric, particularly in relation to grief, holds ''true'', via close readings of recent poems which foreground a complex ''I'' under duress.
The Poetry Book Society is honoured to sponsor the StAnza Lecture by PBS Summer Choice Sinéad Morrissey.
StAnza 2018 is also supported by Culture Ireland as part of GB18: Promoting Irish Arts in Britain
