Writing Motherhood

This event on 10th June 2018 has past.

Contact: editor@southbankpoetry.co.uk

Being a mother is a life long commitment. Once you are a mother, you never stop being one, regardless of what happens in life. Motherhood is a fascinating and never-ending subject to write about for both men and women as everyone has had a mother at some point in their lives, however fleetingly.

This session will concentrate on image making while exploring the theme of motherhood. We will look at what metaphors and similes are before writing some of our own, and discussing how to incorporate them into our poems successfully.

We will then look at different ways to come up with images that startle the reader. The afternoon will look at extended metaphor as a device in writing and the best ways to develop and maintain an image throughout a poem.

The session will begin by looking at poets such as Clare Pollard and Sylvia Plath, closely analyzing and discussing images within their work while seeing what we can learn from them.

This session is suitable for beginners and advanced poets alike.
