In Manchester's first year as a UNESCO City of Literature we are delighted to announce that Marilyn Hacker will be delivering the annual Rylands Poetry Reading. The event ties in closely with our outstanding modern and contemporary literary archives at the John Rylands Library and is presented in partnership with the Centre for New Writing at the University of Manchester.

Marilyn Hacker is an award-winning poet best known for formal poems that mix high culture and colloquial speech. Over a career spanning forty years, Hacker has established herself as a preeminent voice in the tradition of Robert Lowell and Adrienne Rich. From her first book, the National Book Award winning Presentation Piece (1974), Hacker has defined the dimensions of a poetic universe that she continues to explore. The dazzling variety of verse forms on display in Presentation Piece includes sonnets, sestinas, villanelles, blank verse, and heroic couplets—all forms that Hacker uses in subsequent work.

Blazons: New and Selected Poems will be published in March 2019.

Marilyn will read from her own feminist, political and intimate poetry, as well as translations from the Arabic and French.

Marilyn Hacker is the author of thirteen books of poems, including A Stranger’s Mirror (Norton, 2015), Names (Norton, 2010), and Essays on Departure (Carcanet, 2006) an essay collection, Unauthorized Voices(Michigan, 2010), and DiaspoRenga, a collaborative sequence written with Deema Shehabi (Holland Park Press, 2014). Her translations of French and Francophone poets include books by Emmanuel Moses, Marie Etienne, Vénus Khoury-Ghata, Habib Tengour and Rachida Madani. Her translations from Arabic (of Zakaria Tamer, Golan Haji, Fadwa Suleiman and Yasser Khanjer) have appeared in PN Review, Agni, Prairie Schooner Modern Poetry in Translation, The Paris Review Words Without Borders, POEM and A Public Space. Her awards include the National Book Award, the 2009 American PEN award for poetry in translation, the 2010 PEN Voelcker Award and the international Argana Prize for Poetry from the Beit as-Sh’ir/ House of Poetry in Morocco in 2011. She lives in Paris.
