Robert Garnham and Annum Salman will be the guest poets during five hours of open-mic poetry organised by Write Out Loud Woking in the café of the Lightbox museum and art gallery in Woking during Poetry Day at Woking literary festival on Saturday 27 April. Robert Garnham is a comedy spoken word artist from Devon. Over the years he has headlined at top spoken word nights such as Bang Said the Gun in London, Evidently in Manchester, Hammer and Tongue in both Bristol and Brighton. He has won or been placed second at slams in Exeter, Wolverhampton, Edinburgh, Swindon and London. He has recently headlined at the Duplex in New York and the King Kong Klub in Berlin. He often appears at comedy nights and has supported John Hegley and Arthur Smith. Robert has appeared at festivals such as Womad and London gay pride, and his one-hour show Static recently featured at festivals in Bath, Guildford and the Edinburgh Fringe, where he has performed for the last three years. His first collection was published in 2016 by Burning Eye Books. He is currently working with the musical jazz improvisation group Croydon Tourist Office, and has narrated and appeared in a short film, ‘Professor in the Bathroom’.
Annum Salman is a Pakistani poet whose debut poetry collection Sense Me is about gender inequality, mental health, and culture. With her book, she aims to encourage conversations on topics that are taboo in Asian culture. She left the PR world in Pakistan to pursue an MA in creative writing at the University of Surrey. Last year she stepped up to the mic at the Lightbox literary festival in Woking. She has also appeared at That's What She Said in Shoreditch, Dorking is Talking, the 1000 Monkeys in Guildford, and Surrey New Writers Festival.

And so … we look back on a four-hour and 55-minute Poetry Day marathon at Woking literary festival, with all its hurly-burly. We had two glittering feature poets, Anum Salman and Robert Garnham, who in their very different ways provided marvellous moments. Nine newcomers to Write out Loud Woking - Ian Lee-Dolphin, Heather Cook, Tom McColl, 16-year-old Elodie Fenton, Trevor Breedon, Richard Hawtree, Rachel Woolf, Shirley Kirkoff, and Mary Pargeter. A total of 28 open-mic poets, that also included including Pete Jardine, David Russomano, Janet Collinson, Kitty Coles, Denise Bundred, Karen Izod, Karen Swaley, Daniel Jeffery, Janice Dempsey, Donall Dempsey, Ray Pool, Heather Moulson, Michael Cutchey, Geoffrey Pimlott, Andy BJ Low, Amanda Briggs, Lorri Pimlott, Chris Ross, and Matthew Paul. Grateful thanks to Frances Wood for manning the poetry bookstall throughout, and overseeing the sales of more than £100-worth of books. Not forgetting those indefatigable comperes, Greg Freeman and Rodney Wood. Thanks as always to the Lightbox for inviting us to be part of their festival, and awarding us a five-hour slot. If and when next year’s invitation comes around, I think five hours may be long enough!
