I joined Poetry Plus in July 2017 and a more welcoming group and pleasant atmosphere one would be hard pressed to find! The focus is on reading poetry, pure and simple. The October meeting gives a good idea of the eclectic material that one can expect to hear. As well as attendees having the opportunity to read their own work there were pieces from such well known names as Sir John Betjeman, Mya Angelou, Pam Ayres, Yeats and W H Auden. Themes covered such diverse material as homelessness, the countryside and Bruegel's Fall of Icarus! Several readers also took the opportunity to read Halloween themed poems. If you can, do give Poetry Plus a try. A warm welcome and stimulating evening await!

There are snipers of course who try to top the bill, a cutting remark here, a subtle comment there.
Some people bring their friends along. We've had Ella Wheeler Wilcox,Bukowski, Pam Ayres, Dylan Thomas, Kipling to name a few. But most people bring their own work to enjoy the read-a-round. Sometimes we break into discussion about metre and form, haiku, sonnets and such things, though it's mostly informal free-verse, a bit of rhyme, prose poem, what you like "As you like it".
We meet the second Tuesday every month in the pump room of the Red Lion, Manningtree. Naturally there's beer but some drink tea. The laughs are best. It's friendly, relaxed, a good atmosphere and all are welcome; readers and listeners alike.
So come, that "15minutes of fame" beckons.
Gordon Hoyles.

An interesting evening with some great poetry. Although not themed many of the poems reflected the topic of remembrance.

A most enjoyable evening!
This was our fifth meeting and an enthusiastic group of people produced a wide range of poetry. Although completely unplanned, it seemed as if one poem almost slid effortlessly into the next.
Many thanks to all who contributed so much to make it a truly memorable evening!
Richard
