Graham Buchan's new book of poetry and prose, dedicated to the memory of his father and published by Lapwing, will be launched at The Lamb, 94 Lamb's Conduit Street, London WC1. Nearest tubes are Russell Square and Holborn. Wine and two guest poets. Books at a discounted price on the night.

Eamonn Lynskey writes, "Graham Buchan combines cold observance with Emily Dickinson’s advice to ‘tell all the truth, but tell it slant’. In The Torturer and His Love for Beethoven we are presented with a family man and, obliquely, his horrific workaday deeds.

Tough reading, though leavened by an acerbic humour as in Imbros, a compelling treatment of the heroics of war as seen through the eyes of a lowly foot-soldier.

Counterbalancing these grim pieces are poems of a fragile tenderness: We Found tersely encapsulating why our personal lives are so beset by failure. And who will not be softened by the mouth-watering deliciousness of Chocolate? Life is full of awful moments but there is comedy too, these poems say, as in (unforgettably) The Sweet Taste of a Change for the Better. And it is this that enables us to carry on, despite whatever is thrown at us."
