Join us for a one day workshop of poetry-writing and printmaking, based in the elegant and spacious Garden Room at Pensthorpe, with David Redfield and Diane Griffiths.
This joint workshop will focus on producing unique works fusing word and image, using materials and inspiration gathered from Pensthorpe’s beautiful and stimulating natural environment. David and Diane will guide you through the process of bringing your poetic and visual impulses to life, helping you to generate pieces that achieve a creative interdependence between the two media.
You will have the opportunity to field-walk the park and collect observations, ideas, textures, and other stimuli for your work. Our aim is that students each produce a small number of pieces successfully capturing their experiences.
David and Diane have a twenty-year working relationship of collaboration; both take a keen interest in the mysterious effect produced by the union of poetry and printmaking, striving to move beyond the realm of “illustrated poetry” or “pictures with text”.
The workshop is open to anyone aged 16 years or above and is ideal for beginners and more experienced students in both writing and picture making.
The poetry:
Simply bring a pen and something to write on. We will be modelling poetic forms that lend themselves to this approach (including cinquains, and other short forms) which will help with scaffolding and honing your writing. Students will get the chance to bring several pieces to fruition.
The printmaking:
Students will have the opportunity to explore a range of basic printmaking and graphic techniques, enabling them to produce images that resonate with, and enhance their text. These techniques may include stencil work, simple relief and drypoint, as well as chine collé and other ways of incorporating simple text. All the inks provided will be water-based, and all materials are included in the booking cost. Please bring an apron or alternative clothes-covering, and a pair of rubber/latex gloves, if so desired.
Entry: £85 per person
Time: 9.30 am - 4.30 pm
