What does “space, place and belonging” mean to the diaspora?
This session will take a multifaceted approach, looking at the past, present and future. We’ll momentarily reflect back on postcolonial theory (don’t worry, this isn’t a theory heavy session, mainly a creative intro!), discuss how these still affect us in the present, and visualise as a group what the future could look like. Featuring readings from Arachne Press’s Where We Find Ourselves Anthology, including Jallianwalla Bagh by our facilitator Nikita Aashi Chadha, there will be active breakout room discussions of the images, themes and emotions these instil within us as diasporic writers. Finally, the last section of the workshop will be dedicated to free-writing exercises guided by prompts, theory and the poems read as a group. There will be time and space for participants to share work and to receive feedback (if they should wish!).
By the end of this session, participants will have completed or started a poem, prose or other creative expression of what “space, place and belonging” looks like to them. Nikita is committed to this session being a safe space for people within the diaspora: that’s who this workshop is for. That doesn’t need to be limited to one type of diaspora, but this is a closed space for the global majority. For writers and creatives, accomplished and new: see you soon!
