Talking Rhythm! opens its doors and its arms to the fabulous poet ANNA SOMERSET to launch its 2024 Autumn sessions. A generous contributor to the Open Mic, it is a joy to be able to feature Anna reading from her first collection. From the Doggerlanders which was published in May 2024 by London Poetry Books.
Last year four of her poems were commissioned by the British Council award-winning photographer and film maker, Peter Bromley for his zine, Voir. Poems have been published in the Lampeter Review and her poem about her father’s dementia was shortlisted by poet Anthony Vahni Capaldeo for the Alzheimer’s Society poem of the year in 2019. Her poems have been broadcast on East London Radio and film poems on Outdoor verses in an Indoor World. Anna’s poem Blighted Bucks, is representing her county in Fin Hall’s film compendium about the different counties of the UK. Two of Anna’s poems have been selected by Morecambe Poetry Festival to be in their anthology and Anna has freshly returned from reading them in Morecambe.
A late developer following being a forced right-hander at the hands of overbearing parents, she started writing poetry in her mid-40s after a friend’s suicide, but duties as active parent, step parent, parental carer and full-time worker until 2023 slowed the flow. Anna was a very successful charity fundraiser, raising £18m for Greenwich’s Cutty Sark and £2m for University College of Osteopathy. The bucket shaking is now over as she works part time as activities co-ordinator in a care home and has an enchanting new friend of 103! A child of northern art teacher parents in rural Bucks, she spent a year training to be an actor at E15 and performs her poems regularly; feature spots include Paper Tiger, Islington’s Poetry Shack, She Grrrowls and she has been Mistress of Ceremonies at Survivors Poetry and at the Multicultural Poetry Fair at Conway Hall.
Featured Musician will be ALICE RENOUF "soul stretching" singer with Americana and Folk local legends True Believers and singer-songwriter and guitarist of her original songs. Her album Wildflowers promoted by Global Fusion Music and Arts can be found at https://globalfusionmusicarts.bandcamp.com/.../alice...
And as always we welcome YOU Talking Rhythm! at the Open Mic with two poems/songs.
