I found that old crate full of

dried Black Walnuts you left

acrid and hard

little balls of ancient elephant skin

I took one

to drop among the folds

of your coffin

perhaps tuck it under your sleeve

No prying undertaker

or sanctimonoius son

would ever see it

But I couldn't find you there

you seemed long gone from that polished

joke of a room

The Matriarchs

Two moms of talent and power

One learned to use it

One learned to give it away

One's dad said get off that pony

and walk back home

The other said get on and ride hard

One gave me away

The other took me on

Neither loved me

I learned to ride

and walk  home through the very darkest wood

Xmas 1992

Old times

The crunch of stubble underfoot

in the winter field

walking the hard

plow broken ground

kicking frozen clods

off the tops of the furrows

cold freezing hairs in my nose

A flock of crows hassling

a hawk or an owl

just over the hill

racketing rage and

flinging themselves up and down

in suicide dives

black rags

against the icy blue

Bone

I'm a dog for a bone

an old dog for that

greasy pan lickin' and

lazy dirthole rollin'

A jump up shake off

lope away hound

off to suck an egg

or steal a chicken

but they tied a rotting

carcass round my neck
