devil's sympathies 
dried up streams 
where letters used to be

smoke-filled rooms 
warm with murmuring lips
rumors left vacant as coal dust

chalk outlines traded
for slow leaks of nitrous oxide 
and the velveteen burn of a leash

taut teachings of how to loosen up 
and laugh again
