Favourite opening lines of a poem
What's your favourite opening line or lines from a poem...the imagery that always stick in your mind.
Here's my opener:
Lady Life's a thing in bloom,
Death goes dogging everywhere;
She's the tenant of the room,
He's the ruffian on the stair.

Scouring out the porridge pot
Round and round and round;
Out with all the scraith and scoopery
Lift the eeely, ooly droopery
Chase the glubberry, slubbery gloopery
Round and round and round.
Round and round and round;
Out with all the scraith and scoopery
Lift the eeely, ooly droopery
Chase the glubberry, slubbery gloopery
Round and round and round.

DH Lawrence- The Piano
Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me;
Taking me back down the vista of years, till I see
A child sitting under the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings
And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as she sings.
Philip Larkin- Aubade
I work all day, and get half-drunk at night.
Waking at four to soundless dark, I stare.
In time the curtain-edges will grow light.
Till then I see what's really always there
Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me;
Taking me back down the vista of years, till I see
A child sitting under the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings
And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as she sings.
