Why do we write?

Hey people, very interesting these discussions and reviews, I'm sorry I had to leave like that, I've been poorly and my body was just kicking off but i'm back in the saddle! (I wonder if that was a good expression?) Well, a lot of discourse has been going on amongst some writer friends of mine and i just wanted to extend that to the general house-why do we write? Is it a compulsion? a duty? for enjoyment? what? why do we write what we write? why do we write at all? what do we see ourselves as? social commetators? consciences? rebels?
I know this isn't as profound a discourse as many would like but it was fun talking about it and maybe you'd like to join in.
Anyways, here's one of my takes on it. Cheers.

NO AMBUIGUITY

I am the pretty face
The wide smile
The innocent look
I tell the lies you hide
Your sensual thoughts uncovered
I’m shocking, revealing
Indiscreet!
I tell the thoughts you smother
In between embarrassed lips
‘Go on say it!’ no!
The hidden demons that haunt you
Delight you, torment you, and scandalize you
I expose
I am the truth-teller
Secret revealer
Your secret fears broadcast
Your hidden hideous? Thoughts exposed

A gun, a wand, a perpendicular stick of sugar
It is what turns your inner being into molten lava
Laugh embarrassed and die inside
A mole, a road or a hole with soul
It is what makes you blink rapid quick
Curl up inside and cry
Call, think or do it
It’s exposed! To me, dirty liar!

Hi Abi,
I really like the poem and I think this is a very interesting discourse indeed. And I for one would like to know what others think.
I think writing is a compulsion that can become a craft and vice versa it can be a craft that becomes a compulsion.
I think great writing often comes from a need to understand the world and the things that happen in it, whether this comes from a place of pain, purpose all political ambition.

What a great poem Sophie - that's great - I love your sense of irony.

For me the below sums it up.

Writing

Writing ignites a spark in me
Lighting flames of creativity
Heat warms me to my sole
Gives freedom and control

Words form and pour out of me
As does rain from atop a tree
A steady flow forms into a line
Word line begin to inter-twine

Each line or twine begins to form
I tease them together to reform
Into poems with a turn of phrase
My words flow to the next phase

Personally sourced from inner being
Held within verses; it’s me your seeing
Waves of raw feeling lay open; bare
I hope can enable you; help more share

Don’t hide below sailing the ‘Creative Sea’
It is wrong to hide; celebrate your disability
Get on the main deck; no more disguises
Be surprised; re-ignite; there are many prizes

To complete nautical miles; loose rope; set sale
Each journey start somewhere with its own tale
No matter which direction you point your compass
You have the right of choice; make it come to pass

Whatever lights those sparks in you
Become as one with your sole; not two
Seek counsel but you’re state attorney
Live life is for living; this is your journey

Cheers

Interesting views here, i'm glad at the response and from what i have read, a writer isn't writing primarily to make money (though we all want that) but to ease the burden within, i really like the view of it being a compulsion at one point or the other, so mostly, a writer doesn't write just because they want to say something but because something on the inside needs to be said, its like being pregnant, whether a woman likes it or not, once that baby's inside, it must come out one way or the other. i look forward to hearing more views. a splendid week to everyone
