Biography

I have been writing poetry for many years but only in the last two years have I actually performed any. I belong to a local poetry group and we meet up, share poetry and offer advice. We also give spoken word performances at our local park cafe where we raise money for local causes. I write various themes of poetry but enjoy exploring the nature of relationships and love. Poetry has helped me come to terms with areas of my life that have been difficult and I find the healing side of words extremely powerful.

Samples

Growing Up Took Me Longer Like a vulture on my shoulder You pecked away at my idolatry. Flamboyant in your Burberry coat, I envied your poise, your skill at being the life and soul of every party. A showy pink peony, petals unfurled, to my shy violet. I worshipped your shadow. But...... you were my sarcastic dictionary. Correcting. Mocking. Highlighting my faux pas in alpha order. An A-Z of put downs-intended for my own good. You listed my incorrect vocabulary as you smoked another cigarette. Yet.... violets blossom in the early spring rain. Shadows fade. Sarcastic dictionaries become dog eared, tattered with over use. Flamboyance fades when Burberry goes out of fashion, smoke clears and the party season ends. We grew up. Apart. Me later than the rest. But, with gentle persuasion. Carefully crafted words. The hidden flower is gathered in more caring hand. Nurtured. Loved. You were my sarcastic dictionary. But he has a broader vocabulary than that. Colette Hutley 2018.
