THE WORLD IN BLOOM
(A pic of my garden rockery looking swell)
We suffer at the World Cup from the Germans’ discipline
In rugby and in cricket it’s the same;
You’d think New Zealand and the Aussies too might let us win
Inventing as we did the bloody game!
But all good things, the saying goes, will come to he who waits
In time those foreign countries will admire us
As Britain plays the ace it holds beyond its garden gates,
Courtesy of this corona virus.
For on every patch of garden there’s a bloke who tends his plot
To take a break outdoors from doom and gloom
And thus we’ll show the Jerries and the Ities what was what
When we take first place in gardening’s World in Bloom.
Perhaps he’s pruning roses, cutting back to this year’s buds
Or simply digging for the exercise
He’s sowing seeds of brassicas, he’s planting up his spuds
He’s unaware he’s heading for the prize.
Yes, at penalties, the Ashes and the rest we’re always failures
With second place the best you could assume;
But nurturing geraniums, tomatoes or his dahlias?
At gardening we’ll smash the World in Bloom.
