The Midas Touch

The Midas Touch

I saved the life of Lady Luck

And as a thank you I was told

That all I touched metaphorically

Would surely turn to gold

This gift came with a caveat

That seemed to be quite fair

I mustn’t get too greedy

Or all would turn to despair

And from that day without a doubt

I’ve found this to be true

I’ve won small bets on horseracing

And a game of cards or two

My business ventures were all sound

I met my gorgeous wife

I guess you could say safely

That I’ve had a lucky life.

But as time went on I wanted more

I knew I needed cash

To make all my dreams come true

So I acted rather rash

And went to one of those private clubs

Where anything can be won

And there they passed me discretely

A jewel encrusted gun

They told me that one bullet

Would be put into the chamber

And I would have to spin the barrel

My life would be in danger

The odds were six to one

So I accepted the bet

That good old gift from Lady Luck

Had never failed me yet

I would be rewarded handsomely

A million on the spin

I took the gun and spun the chamber

Knowing I had to win

I raised the barrel to my head

My heart began to race

I pulled the trigger gently

A smile upon my face

But I had misused Lady Luck

I never could have won

And I should have watched more carefully

As they put the bullet in the gun

For every bejewelled pistol

Has a secret to unfold

In keeping with its splendour

The bullet was made of gold

An epic! What a lovely write, I must say. A challenging read kept me glued till the end. Good one.
