INDEPENDENCE DAY
“We on this continent should never forget that men first crossed the Atlantic not to find soil for their ploughs but to secure liberty for their souls. – Robert J. McCracken
My mom was leaving this world
Her final days were spent with music
It had gotten late and everyone was asleep
She had drifted off and this song was her favorite.
Reminded her of when she was young in Brooklyn.
I started singing it and she reached over and grabbed my hand
She started singing along and she had such grace.
It was like she was just going to get up the next day and be fine.
I was just a teenager and she was trying to get me to go back to sleep.
I don't share her faith, but this moment was holy.
I am sad that I can't send this song to her,
But maybe she hears it anyway.

Yes, Mark, you are exactly correct in tracing the origins of this song to the brilliant song writing pairing of Kern & Fields.. ""The Way You Look Tonight" is a song from the film Swing Time that was performed by Fred Astaire and composed by Jerome Kern with lyrics written by Dorothy Fields. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1936. Fields remarked, "The first time Jerry played that melody for me I went out and started to cry. The release absolutely killed me. I couldn't stop, it was so beautiful.""
