Switching On The Tree Lights
A special day for Kirkby Lonsdale
On the first Saturday of December
When Father Christmas comes to visit
A tradition to treasure and remember
Santa rides in a horse drawn carriage
He waves his wand at the unlit trees
One by one the tree lights switch on
He has magical power, everyone agrees
Crowds line up on narrow pavements
Jostle for the perfect place to stand
Wait impatiently for the man himself
Whilst listening to the marching band
Wrapped up in warm winter coats
Children with rosy cheeks all aglow
Toddlers tucked up in their buggies
Watch the parade and wish for snow
Unfortunately due to Coronavirus
Santa cancelled his visit this year
Shops switched on their own lights
Bringing the town much needed cheer
This year there are no excited children
Sat on shoulders to get the best view
No long queues to visit Santa’s grotto
No fairground rides for me and you
No alpine Christmas market chalets
Selling gifts and handmade treats
No aroma of mince pies and gluhwein
No friends sharing meets and greets
But.....The town looks beautiful and festive
Christmas may be different this year
The tree lights still shine bright at night
Bringing the town much needed cheer
