How Would It Look?
We’ve been told to “Live every day as if it’s our last,”
But what would it look like if we, “Lived every day as if it were someone else’s?”
Would we make just a little more time, find just one more question to ask?
Be a little more kind, considerate, a little less selfish?
If we truly believed that it was our last chance to hear their words,
Do you think we might actually, finally, make time to listen?
Would we put all else briefly aside, that their precious voices might be heard?
Would we give them our full attention, without prejudice or precondition?
Would we pay more attention to their tone and intonation?
Would we value each thought more, knowing it might be their last?
Would we set aside the temptation to express our frustration?
At how much time that it would take and how much of it’s passed?
Would be more patient, would we, “Reach out,” more often?
If we valued every day with them as the last we’d share?
Would it make our minds more open, make the hardest of hearts soften?
If we told ourselves, “Tomorrow, they just might not be there?”
How would the world look if we took the time to listen,
To everyone who spoke as if today might be their last?
Perhaps we’d all benefit from the humble recognition,
That one day their precious voices will live only in the past.
