Apples & Snakes Move HQ
Apples & Snakes, one of the UK’s leading organisation for performance poetry, installs itself in new offices at The Albany in Deptford on 17 March 2008. The move comes at a pivotal moment as The Albany carves a space for itself as the first venue in London to be led by its spoken word programme.
Geraldine Collinge, director of Apples & Snakes, says, ‘The Albany has a commitment to spoken word in its programming and wants to use it as a driver at this exciting time in its development. Apples & Snakes is looking forward to working in partnership with the Albany on this work and on other partnership programmes.’
Gavin Barlow, director of The Albany, says, ‘Apples & Snakes is an inspirational company and we are delighted to welcome them to the Albany. The move is a natural development of our relationship as producer and venue and underlines our commitment to developing spoken word as an art-form.’
Apples & Snakes brings a team of eight full time and four part time members of staff. They will continue to develop their national programme of artist development from this office, alongside programme coordinators in Plymouth, Derby, Manchester and Cumbria, as well as working in partnership with The Albany to bring artists from across the country on stage here.
A Housewarming Poetry Party on 11 April 2008 will mark the beginning of the residency. The line-up celebrates the diversity of the spoken word scene with performers from London, Brighton and Norwich. Champion of oral and jazz poetry Michael Horovitz performs alongside multiple-slam winner and member of poetry boyband Aisle 6, Joel Stickely, and British-Trinidadian maestro of calypsonian rhythms Alexander D Great.
Apples & Snakes has been a resident company at BAC over the past eight years and will continue to work with BAC building on the work that has been developed collaboratively. In particular, we will showcase new work by Zena Edwards as part of the Burst festival in May and will continue to work in partnership on the national Incubate artist development programme.
