Lee Park 68-92

Though I left Lee Park for pastures new.
I returned to see mates, as young lads do!
I spent my youth there, a teenager by then.
Mischief levels grew from when I was 10!

We learnt how to 'stick' the lift in full flight.
We played 'Bulldog' until no more light.
To get on the roof was easy...child's play.
But those high winds nearly blew us away!

Dangerous high jinks on Attlee House roof.
But we weren't all bad, and that's the truth!
Mind you...the chute we would often clog.
And we would always tease Sandy the dog!

On Saturday we had match money to earn.
So to become a golf caddie we had to learn.
On Lee Park golf course, a few bob we made.
For our entry into The Kop, that money paid!

We had many a sleep over in Auntie Vi's.
Weekends where special, but how time flies.
Before I knew it, I was then approaching 16.
I left Lee Park behind, the caretakers dream!

But many years later in a clear twist of fate.
I returned to Lee Park as a postman in 88'!
To the Prime Minister blocks I posted the mail.
All the old memories came back without fail.

Vi had long moved from Attlee House by then.
But our family kept in touch, by visit and pen.
The 5 blocks of houses sadly fell into disrepair.
So each block closed down until nobody there.

I still had my postie round on Ringway Road.
With a tear in my eye, as I carried my load.
Then Sept 92' came the day they lit the fuse.
Lee Park was taken over by demolition crews.

So the 5 blocks all waited to hear the order 'fire'
Attlee House stood in the middle, all grey attire.
They fell together, defiant and proud to the last.
They groaned and collapsed in the mighty blast.

The plumes of dust clouded the Lee Park sky.
People gathered in safety, I wasn't alone to cry.
Ghosts of the past in that dust, I thought I saw.
They came to wave me goodbye, of that I'm sure.
